Fenestraz is the 2017 Eurocup FR 2.0 champion

The Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season has come to its conclusion this Sunday afternoon in Spain. Two final races of the year took place in Barcelona and Sacha Fenestraz (Josef Kaufmann Racing) was crowned as the 2017 champion with 367.5 points by the end of the day.

The Frenchman secured his title with the second place in the morning. Feeling a bit of relief, he started the final race from pole position and won for the 7th time this year.

Will Palmer (R-ace GP) finished the 2017 season in second position with 298 points and 3 wins earlier this season.

Robert Shwartzman (R-ace GP) was the fastest man in Barcelona scoring his second win of the weekend in the morning. The Russian driver, who recently entered Ferrari Driver Academy, pressurized Fenestraz in the third race and finished 2nd to make it the most successful weekend of the year for himself. Overall Shwartzman had 6 wins, 7 pole positions and 7 fastest laps thoughout this season.

Max Defourny (R-ace GP) concluded the Eurocup season in 4th position with 232 points. After retiring from the race in the morning’s huge pile-up in the first corner, the Belgian driver finished the in third position in the final session in front of the intense group of Will Palmer, Richard Verschoor (MP Motorsport), Gabriel Aubry (Tech 1 Racing) who completed the top-5 of the championship and Max Fewtrell (Tech 1 Racing) who became the best rookie driver of the season.

R-ace GP won the Teams title with devastating 251 points advantage. The French team was always the one to look at thoughout this season and during the final weekend as well: Saturday race saw five R-ace GP drivers in the top 10.

The 2017 Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup championship became one of the most exciting and interesting seasons in this junior category in the last several years. There’s no doubt we will see many of these drivers competing in the higher leagues in the next couple of years and some of them may soon find themselves in “The Queen of motorsports” itself – Formula 1.

Sacha Fenestraz (Josef Kaufmann Racing): “First, I want to thank the team for the incredible job they have done throughout the year. It is fantastic to finish with a win, like last year. Even though Robert was very fast this weekend, I was able to hold him off this afternoon. This title is the reward for enormous efforts and sacrifices that have been made, and I had a lot of fun on the track. Our consistency over the course of the season paid off and we were fast when it counted. I am on cloud 9 with the idea of joining the Renault Sport Academy!”

Robert Shwartzman (R-ace GP): “I believe this is the first time I have won two races on the same weekend! Having said that, this morning was a little more difficult than yesterday, but it was a great battle with Sacha. I had to defend and cope with the neutralizations before progressively pulling away. This afternoon, it was up to me find a hole. I gave it my all, but it wasn’t to be! It is a shame that the season went by so fast. A big thank you to R-ace GP, SMP Racing, the Ferrari Driver Academy and Renault for everything that I learned this year alongside them.”
